Bioinformatics is a multidisciplinary field that develops and applies computational methods to the extraction, analysis and interpretation of biological data. It is central to genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics, and increasingly to ecology, evolution and medicine. Training in the field happens in very different degree programmes across Europe, and students rarely have the chance to measure themselves against peers from other institutions and countries.

The European Bioinformatics League offers that chance. It is a competition for teams of two higher-education students, designed to encourage learning, to recognise talent, and to bring together a community of current and future researchers and professionals in bioinformatics.

History

The league grows out of the Liga Portuguesa de Bioinformática (LPB), which was itself inspired by the Liga Brasileira de Bioinformática. The first edition of the LPB ran in 2022 and 2023. Its 2026 edition was open to international participants and drew teams from Portugal, Spain, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, Chile and India, with a final held at the Bioinformatics Open Days in Braga. The European Bioinformatics League continues that work at European scale, beginning with the 2027 edition.
